How To Blow-up Your Band On An Artist’s Budget

I’ve been there. Your sound is amazing, your fan base is growing, you are abundant in passion and your wallet has not caught up. Many bands approach the marketing game hot and heavy but ultimately lose steam when it comes to what I like to call “consistence and persistence”. Even more artists simply won’t approach this critical aspect of the industry because they are intimidated or overwhelmed.

I’m here to offer simple, clear and cheap actions that can rocket your band to stardom. If you believe in your music and commit to embracing the business side with these tools, anything is possible. I suggest you start with a few items that seem fun (or at least doable), apply them for a few weeks and once you are comfortable, add a few more. And if you get stuck, just give me a shout: Aaron@Audiolife.com.

10 “Easy To Implement” Musical Marketing Tips

1) Sign-up on every social network you can, and go beyond Myspace and Facebook (eg, Bebo, ILike, IMeem, etc.). Some of these sites have millions of users that you will be missing out on if you only stick to the mainstream social networks.

2) Continue to add new content to your website and social networking profiles (most social networks have feeds so whenever you perform new activities, such as adding photos, songs, blogs, new shows etc., it gets picked up on your feeds for fans to see)
a)Create as many songs as possible (multiple versions etc…).
b)Create a weekly blog: Your music draws fans in. Once you have them on your site, having a personal blog will keep them on your site. As they get to know you, the loyalty grows in leaps and bounds.
c)Create as many videos as possible: This doesn’t have to be a video that costs thousands of dollars to create. It could be as simple as a video you record at home working on your newest song while playing an acoustic guitar.

3) Get your fans involved!
a)Have them rate songs.
b)Engage them in the process of choosing what songs will be on your album.
c)Engage them in the process of selecting your album artwork and packaging.

4) Create Fan Ambassadors.
a)Whenever you find true fans that love you and your music, do anything you can to make them feel as involved in your career as possible. They are the ones who will help spread the word.
b)Create custom CDs just for them with their name on it.
c)Write them a song for their birthday and give it to them as a ringtone, download or CD.
d)Give them the task to help spread your music; they are more than willing to do that.

5) Network with other Bands constantly. Make friends!
a)This should be your number one goal anytime you are around musicians. By doing so, you can start booking new events with these artists, and this will help expand your fan base immensely.
b)The more people you know, the more people will help you get known.

6) Connect with Music Bloggers.
a)This is critical. Bloggers focus on getting content out daily, and want to be the person who finds the next big thing. They love to write about music, and establishing a good relationship with key bloggers will help spread the word about your music.
b)Anytime you find a blog you dig, comment and lead them back to your band’s site.

7) Brand your Band!
a)Make sure your website and social networking profiles are tight and enticing when a new fan visits your page.
b)Create: a cool logo that your fans would post around as stickers, flyers, or something they would love to wear; custom products; a CD and merchandise item for every live show; custom shirts for specific fans with their names on it.
c)Sign each of the products that you sell at your shows.
d)Give away your merchandise to fans who will wear it and promote your music.
e)Have a beautiful girl and handsome guy manage your email list during shows. Many men find it hard to turn down writing an email when a beautiful girl comes up to him. You have to use that to your advantage.

8) Utilize tried and true guerilla email marketing tactics.
a)Make sure you add new friends to your social networking profiles on a daily basis. You can do this all day. I would recommend adding the maximum daily as you never know what new fan you will reach, and how that fan can help you.
b)The more you send out, the more you increase the odds of getting new fans
c)Don’t be afraid to send messages out over and over, keep your band and brand in their head at all times. If they don’t listen to you the first or second time you sent a message, they will the third.

9) Follow up with your fans.
a)Send a message to every new fan that is added to your social network profile- this should be instantaneous. Follow up with them and ask how they are enjoying the music.
b)Write comments on other artist’s walls that are similar to you. This helps to create new exposure to their fans (great minds, and all that).

10) Spread the word!
a)Whenever you have a new product, or a big update for your band, get it out there: blog, bulletin, email and SMS text your fans with updated info.

Bingo is a popular game of chance involving cards with numbers appearing randomly on them under the letters B-I-N-G-O. Using a more modern blower, or a traditional tumbler, a machine that is generally hand-operated and containing balls with numbers and the letters B-I-N-G-O corresponding to the cards, numbers are pulled at random and announced to the players. Players then check to see if they have the numbers under the corresponding letter. If they do, they mark the card with tools known as a dauber or marker. For example, if the ball is B-9, players would check to see if they have the number 9 under the letter B. The game is won when the first player to mark a card with a full row either diagonally or horizontally announces they have a Bingo. This is usually done by yelling out the word Bingo. Bingo is a game enjoyed by many people and covers many demographics. Children in grade school often play educational varieties of Bingo. In addition, it’s a game often seen in casinos. There are actually many varieties of Bingo.

The most common is the single-line win mentioned above. However, there are also variations played that require a winner to have filled every square on the card. Of course these games are more time consuming. Players often have multiple cards, which increases their odds of winning. Like many other games, Bingo has a rich tradition that includes its own etiquette and terminology. For instance, it is considered very rude to talk to other players or make noise while a game is in session. The terminology itself can take a long time to master. Bingo has earned itself the reputation of being the game of the older generation, with movies and television depicting the elderly playing the game all day. Bingo is a staple game of both churches and charity organizations, where players often compete for donated prizes. With the advent of the internet and online gambling, Bingo has crossed over as a mainstay of online casinos. In fact, there are now numerous online casinos that cater to Bingo exclusively. In these situations, a random number generator is used in place of a blower or tumbler. Bingo has its roots in 16th century Italy, where it can be traced back to a popular lottery game of the time. From there, it spread to the rest of Europe, and continues to this day all over the world.

hujan

I read an interview somewhere with Sandy Monteiro (a Malaysian music industry veteran) about two years ago, at a time when every single publication in Malaysia seemed to get off on writing obituaries about the Malaysian music industry. For once I agreed with what an industry insider said: that the industry was not actually dying but just stuck in a rut and was in need of that one act to make everyone excited again–just like what Sheila On 7 did in Indonesia in the late 90s/early 00s.

And just as Sheila On 7 made it okay for Indonesian bands to sound a little fresher, and incorporate more modern influences and still be successful, like it or not Hujan’s also made it a lot more attractive for Malaysian indie bands to start singing in Malay, and made a lot more Malaysian kids care more for Malaysian indie bands.

And with Hujan’s debut album, the Sheila On 7 comparison comes full circle. Filled with wonderfully heartfelt songs–just like on Sheila On 7’s debut Kisah Klasik Untuk Masa Depan–this album is not for all the hipsters out there, but made for us ordinary people who simply want to have a song touch our hearts and lift our souls.

The new songs, especially ‘Jiwa Kelajuan’, ‘Rantai Rasa’ and ‘Dugaannya’, even sound a lot like Sheila On 7. Alongside two more previously unreleased songs, the album also includes eight songs from their two previous EPs (remixed, of course) and a re-recorded version of what I think is their masterpiece, ‘Bila Aku Sudah Tiada’. Gone also are much of the distorted vocal effects (which clearly invited all the Strokes comparisons before), resulting in an album that can be enjoyed by anyone–a right decision if you ask me, as Hujan’s clearly not the sole property of just indie kids anymore. So stop being so selfish, and be happy for Hujan and wish them well.

Music Articles And Life Enrichment

Music Articles And Life Enrichment

Whether you admit it or not, music imbeds our daily life, weaving its beauty and emotion through our thoughts, activities and memories. So if you're interested in music theory, music appreciation, Beethoven, Mozart, or other composers, artists and performers, we hope you'll spend some time with here and learn from these music articles of note for all ages and tastes.

When I first started studying the history of music, I did not realize what I was getting into. I had thought that music history was somewhat of a trivial pursuit. In fact, I only took my history of classical music class because I needed the credits. I did not realize how completely fascinating music history is. You see, in our culture many of us do not really learn to understand music. For much of the world, music is a language, but for us it is something that we consumed passively. When I began to learn about the history of Western music, however, it changed all that for me. I have had some experience playing musical instruments, but I have never mastered one enough to really understand what music is all about. This class showed me.

When most of us think about the history of music, we think of the history of rock music. We assume that the history is simple because the music is simple. In fact, neither is the case. The history of music, whether you're talking about classical music, rock music, jazz music, or any other kind, is always complicated. New chord structures are introduced bringing with them new ways of understanding the world. New rhythmic patterns are introduced, bringing with them new ways of understanding time. And music reflects all of it.

Even when the class was over, I could not stop learning about the history of music. It had whetted my appetite, and I wanted more. I got all the music history books that I could find. I even began to research forms of music that had not interested me before in the hopes of enhancing my musical knowledge further. Although I was in school studying toward something very different – a degree in engineering – I had thought about giving it up and going back to get a degree in musicology. That is how much I am fascinated by the subject.

If you have never taken a course in the history of music, you don't know what you are missing out on. The radio will never sound the same to you again. Everything will seem much more rich, much more luminous, and much more important. A new song can reflect a new way of being, and a new way of imagining life in the world. This is what learning about the history of music means to many of us.

Advertlets

I took down my Advertlets Ads from my blog last week as I do not think that it will be a useful monetizing tool for my blog. However, I receive an interesting mail from Josh Lim of Team Advertlets and it got me excited again.

SGD 8800 for 300 Singaporean Bloggers!

I know what you are thinking. Nope, it's not SG$8800 for each blogger. If the payout is really that good, chances are that it is a scam. Here's the breakdown:

* 280 Reviews, SGD 25 each (blogs with more than 10 unique visits per day)
* 10 Reviews, SGD 60 each (blogs with more than 100 unique visits per day)
* 10 Reviews, SGD 128 each (blogs with more than 500 unique visits per day)

My blog is still relatively new. Getting 100 unique visits or more may be out of the question but with the support of my friends in the community, 10 unique visits a day is an achievable target.

Why Sign Up For Advertlets
"Advertlets is a blog advertising network. Bloggers make money doing what they love by selling advertising space on their blogs. Advertisers get to connect their message to the right audience through the use of demographics."

The use of demographics is something new and you will need to have at least 50 people to participate in the demographics poll.

Will the Ads be as relevant as contextual advertising like AdSense?
Only time will tell. One of the reasons why I took down my Adverlets is due to limited ads. Maybe it's because I don't have 50 pple to take the poll, maybe it's because I don't have 50 unique visitors per day or maybe Adverlets just don't have enough advertisers. I will doing another update in 1 month time and I hope to have an answer by then.

How much money can I make?
"We can’t give you a figure right now, obviously. But how much you make would definitely be determined by:

- how much traffic your blog gets.
- how many Malaysian visitors come to your site
- how relevant your blog content is to a wider audience
- your visitor participation rate "

Another reason why I took down my Adverlets - Everything seems so vague. Most glaring being "how many Malaysian visitors come to your site". I believe it must be a mistake but it reflects badly especially when it appears in their FAQ page.

Advertlets Compared With Other Online Advertising Services
"A note: Why have we removed the comparision chart with our nearest local competitor? Simple. We’re taking on bigger competition soon, and bigger challenges. Our network exclusivity level has grown tremendously, and we are now ready to compete in an entirely new space. Stay tuned. Q2-Q3, 2007."

The obvious competitor for Advertlets is Nuffnang - another Advertising company from Malaysia that has recently expended to Singapore. I have not tried it yet but at least they have a more definite answer on their payout. Read it here.

I have decided to give Advertlets another go. I like their novelty and it will be an honor if I could be the one of the first 300 Singaporean blogger to write a review on Advertlets. I have added Advertlets Ads on the left column of my blog. I will greatly appreciate if you could take part in their demographics poll.
